Congratulations to the Pool Professionals Scholarship Winners

Alice Emm of Carlyle & Chatsworth and Bryan Maass of Shepherd's Vineyard are the recipients of the 2013 Pool Professionals Scholarship. Each scholarship is worth $1,000.

Alice is a charter member of the Carlyle & Chatsworth Lakers and an assistant coach. An accomplished swimmer who will compete for UNC-Asheville in the upcoming year, her nominators describe her as a tremendous role model whose humility, spirit and dedication serve as an inspiration to the team's swimmers. Alice describes her experience with TSA as helping teach "me how to make swimming a team sport.”

Bryan is attending Appalachian State University this fall. A 15-year-member of the Shepherd's Vineyard team, he has won his team's spirit award twice and has been a recipient of the Coach's Award for outstanding spirit, dedication and passion. He has been a volunteer coach the past two seasons. "He gets more joy from coaching the (6 & unders) and seeing them succeed than he does from his own accomplishments,'' wrote his head coach.

We had 30 applicants this year and it was a very tough decision. Our teams have many terrific young adults helping to coach, lead and inspire the swimmers. Thank you so much to Pool Professionals and owner David Harvey for offering these generous scholarships.

FAQs:

Q: Why play water polo?
A: It is a fun, team sport and a great way to maintain aquatic shape during a slow time in the swim season.

Q: I can’t make all the practices or games, can I still play?
A: Yes, this is an informal team.

Q: I have never played water polo before, would it be ok to play?
A: Yes, we will help you learn the game.

Q: Is there more than one age-group?
A: In past years, we have played two age groups: 13 and under and 14-17. We may also have field separate girls and boys teams depending on numbers.

Q: Do girls play water polo?
A: Water Polo is one of the fastest growing NCAA scholarship sports for women. As a relatively new sport for women, it takes less experience to obtain a scholarship in this sport than others. A decent swimmer with some knowledge of the game and natural athletic talent could earn a full ride to college. Trivia: The US men’s and women’s teams won silver medals in the 2008 Olympics. Make sure to watch the Olympic water polo games on TV this summer!

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt-Discount on Meet Nights

Menchie's Frozen Yogurt Store (at 5613 Creedmoor Road) is offering 15% off frozen yogurt purchases to swimmers on Tuesday nights after swim meets. Just say you're a swimmer and you'll get this discount! We'll be open until 11:00 p.m. for the three remaining Tuesday night swim meets.

If you're interested in fundraising opportunities for your team or club, please call the store (919.615.1552) and ask to speak with Catherine, one of the owners. We'd be happy to host a spirit night for your team or to discuss other options with you.

Menchie's is a very family-friendly store . Our yogurt is not only delicious, but it is a healthy treat as well (fewer calories & less fat than ice-cream, good amounts of calcium and protein, and it even contains live and active cultures). We're a mile north of Crabtree Mall in Creedmoor Crossings Shopping Center (with the Food Lion and Walgreens). Hope to see you soon and good luck at your meets!
