TSA 2015 Division Winners announced!

Another great TSA regular season has come to an end. It seems like only 6 weeks ago we started out this season, and now it is already over. We hope you all enjoyed the season, and that your kids, parents and coaches had a great time.  The weather cooperated, for the most part, and we only topped 95 degrees at 6:00 pm once, I believe.

Before we finish up the 2015 season with the TSA Championship this weekend at the Triangle Aquatic Center, I wanted to announce the Division winners in each league.

For those teams competing in the TSA Championship, we will present your trophy to your team on the pool deck before the start of the afternoon session on the day your team is swimming. Note: Please plan on being on the pool deck around 12:30 on the day your team is competing.  If you are not competing in the TSA Championship we would still love you for to accept your team's trophy during the presentation on either Saturday or Sunday.

Congratulations to the following teams for winning your division!  We had some very exciting meets and division races this year. Thank you all for contributing to a safe, competitive, and most important, fun, TSA season.

Match for Kevin on Thursday

Join the members at Lakemont Swim & Tennis Club this Thursday, July 16, for a Be The Match Registry event in support of Kevin LeCount, board president of the club.

Kevin was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). In addition to leading the club's board, he's also the proud father of Nathan, a swimmer on the Lakemont Torpedoes swim team (shown in the photo above, with his dad). Kevin's friends and family are working with Be The Match to ensure that Kevin and all searching patients have the best opportunity to find a matching donor for a life-saving marrow/stem cell transplant.

Who: Anyone ages 18-44 who meets the eligibility requirements and is willing to donate to any searching patient can participate.
What: The swab event simply means filling out a registration form and having the inside of your cheek swabbed to have your tissue type tested -- it only takes about 15 minutes.
Where: Lakemont Swim & Tennis Club, 409 Harvard Street in midtown Raleigh
When: Thursday, July 16, anytime between 4:30 and 7 p.m.

"I’m a new patient with AML including the FLT3 gene mutation, which I’ve labeled a 'pesky' leukemia because, after chemo, it tends to come back," Kevin said. "My version of leukemia is almost never survivable without a successful bone marrow transplant and I’m seeking a donor."

Every day, thousands of patients are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases like Leukemia. Many patients hope for a marrow donor with matching tissue type, which is different from a matching blood type. Because tissue typing is inherited, patients are more likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity. People of all races and ethnicity are needed to join Be The Match Registry.

Joining the registry is easy. Be The Match asks every person who joins to registry to keep their contact information up to date and remain committed to donating if called as a potential match for a patient. Patients are counting on all of us to stay committed to our life-saving mission.

The Be The Match registry is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization founded in 1987. Be The Match is dedicated to creating connections within communities to save lives through promoting awareness and education about bone marrow and increasing the number of potential donors on the Be The Match Registry. Only about 30% of patients can find a suitably matched donor among their family members. The remaining 70% require an unrelated donor who can make their transplant possible. Because the odds that two random individuals are HLA matched exceeds one in 20,000, a registry's success depends on a large number of volunteer donors.

For more information, contact Betsie Letterle with Be The Match Marrow Registry at (919) 414-8312 or bletterl@nmdp.org.

Brian Goldman obituary

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to 'close the circle' so to speak. Brian passed away Sunday morning. His funeral will be held tomorrow. Please see his obituary below for details:

Brian Goldman died peacefully Sunday morning after a long battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his wife, Michele, his two adored sons, Jared and Ben, his parents Jill and Alan Goldman, his sisters Betsy Goldman and Melissa Rouse, brother-in-law Scott Rouse, nephews Jake and Austin Rouse, brother and sister-in-laws Mark and Tamar Hauptman and their children, Jacob, Rebecca, Gabrielle, and Noah. He is also survived by his precious Mudpuppy family.

Brian died too young, but he lived more in his 50 years here than most people could in a hundred. In every endeavor he undertook, he strived to be the best he could be. He was a life-long swimmer with a passion for the sport. He held records for years at North Hills Club, and went on to swim for Duke during his undergraduate years. Seven years ago, he combined that love of sport and love of coaching and started the Mudpuppies Swim Team at Meredith Townes Pool. Under his loving leadership, the team achieved unprecedented success, winning division championships for the last five years, with undefeated seasons for the last three. For him, more important than the wins were the life lessons he shared with his young swimmers.

Brian was also a beloved physician practicing at Raleigh Medical Group since 2002. His patients remember him for the care and attention he showed them, and his philosophy that health is really about living well and enjoying life.

He certainly embodied that motto. He loved being in nature, learning new things, and experiencing new adventures. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. To the best of his ability, he held on to his passions until the very end. He will be profoundly missed.

A funeral service to honor his life will be held on March 12, 2015 at 10 am at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Brian's honor to Swim Across America, www.swimacross america.org If you have memories or stories of Brian that you wish to share with his family, please post them at www.car ingbridge.org/visit/coachbrian

A note to all who know Dr. Brian Goldman

Good evening all,

I'm just realizing that I've been remiss in passing along some very somber news to the TSA community; for those of you not already aware, our head coach Brian Goldman, a Raleigh native, physician, lifelong competitive swimmer, and first and only head coach of the Meredith Townes Mudpuppies, is nearing the end of his almost two year battle with cancer. Many of you know him from his involvement in summer swim league, still others of you know him as a RAM swimmer (or earlier, as a Duke swimmer), or perhaps you even grew up with Brian. Regardless of how you came to know him, his passion for life was infectious; everything he has done, he has done with grace and passion. The Mudpuppies are proud to be a part of his legacy.

So, essentially, I'm just writing to let those of you who know Brian that there is a website where his dear wife Michele has been sharing news of his battle, and where anyone can post comments, pictures, words of inspiration, and memories to buoy Brian's spirit. Michele reads them all to Brian. He is currently at Rex hospital, but my sense is that he is not up to visitors any more. Here is the site:

Peace and thanks to all,

Our team would like to have swim caps printed. We haven't had new ones for several years and the place we used before is out of business. Does anyone know the best place to have caps printed?
Thanks!

More information on clinics

There are no fees for any clinics.  No reservations or sign up is required. It is required that you sign in at the clinic that you attend in order to obtain credit for the attendance.  You must also stay the entire time of the clinic. If you can't stay the entire time, please select one that you can.

The online strokeandturn.com is an alternative method of obtaining stroke and turn certification for the TSA summer league. There is a $25.00 fee for this course.  TSA offers this as an alternative for those who can not attend a clinic. If you obtain certification via strokeandturn.com it is your responsibility to know the differences between what they teach on line and our TSA league rules,
(yes there are some slight differences).

Please note that it is not the recommendation of the clinics committee that a person without stroke and turn experience become certified via strokeandturn.com.  We also recommend that if it is your first year as a stroke and turn official or a starter that you find a mentor on your team or a neighboring team.

Thanks!

TSA Clinics

Why do we have mandatory attendance for clinics? The purpose of the clinics is to provide a consistent training and competition experience for TSA's 10,000+ swimmers. We ask for each club's cooperation and commitment in maintaining this standard and keeping TSA a strong summer league.

2015 Schedule
Saturday, May 9th @ TAC in Cary: MEGA CLINIC DAY
    • Starters Clinic at 8:00 am
    • Stroke and Turn Clinic at 9:30 am
    • Coaches Clinic at 11:00 am
Thursday, May 21st @ Planters Walk in Knightdale:
    • Stroke and Turn Clinic at 7:00 pm
Wednesday, May 27th @ Lochmere Highlands Clubhouse (NOT the main Lochmere clubhouse) in Cary:
    • Stroke and Turn Clinic at 7:30 pm
Saturday, May 30th @ North Hills in Raleigh: MEGA CLINIC DAY (No outside food or beverages!)
    • Starters Clinic at 8:00 am
    • Stroke and Turn Clinic at 9:30 am
    • Coaches Clinic at 11:00 am
Thursday, June 4th @ Scotts Mill in Apex:
    • Stroke and Turn Clinic at 7:30 pm

It is mandatory that each team send their coaches to a Coaches clinic every year.

Stroke and Turn officials who do not hold certifications from USA Swimming, the NCHSAA, the NCAA or the YMCA must re-certify every year. Officials who have been certified by one of those outside organizations need only to email TSA vice president Todd Blandford a copy of their credentials before the beginning of each TSA season.

An online option for stroke and turn certification is available at www.strokeandturn.com. There is a $25 fee for this course.  If you certify via the online method you need to ensure that you know the differences between what is taught online versus the TSA rules (yes, there are some differences!). Finally, it is not the recommendation of the TSA Clinics Committee for any first-year official to obtain certification via the online method.
No reservation nor RSVP necessary, just show up on time. Remember to sign in so that you get credit for attendance.  In consideration of others you need to stay the entire clinic.

LAPS for TAPS - Memorial Day Community Swim Event

Are you looking for an event that can bring your community together and raise money for a great cause? Consider sponsoring a "LAPS for TAPS" swim event to raise money for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (T.A.P.S) over Memorial Day Weekend (or any time!).

T.A.P.S. supports families who have been impacted by a death in the military regardless of geography or circumstance. The organization provides an amazing network of resources, seminars and publications at no charge to survivors from all branches of service, including Reserves and National Guard. T.A.P.S. programs and services are available not only for immediate family, but also for extended family and friends.

Our swim team’s involvement grew out of a tragedy. One of our Gator alumni, SPC Andrew Sipple, died on January 17th, 2014 in service to our country while deployed in Afghanistan. The T.A.P.S. organization was terrific to work with and provided support that helped us raise over $6,000. We held the event from 8 am to 11 am on Memorial Day with a breakfast. I’ll be happy to provide a template for how to organize this event. Please email me for details.
