The Winter Swim League (WSL) begins at your choice of indoor Millbrook pool or St. Mary's School pool on January 15, 2013. The WSL is for both novice and experienced swimmers between age 6-13. The WSL group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for eleven (11) weeks and concludes on March 28, 2013. The coaches will instruct swimmers using skill drills and basic technique on each of the four competitive strokes, including starts and turns. The cost of the program is just $200 per athlete and must be paid with the application which is available at www.marlinsofraleigh.com. Every participant receives a t-shirt and swim cap for attending. The AG1 program at MOR for swimmers wishing to compete has been broken into three sessions. The next session begins March 1, 2013 and goes through the end of May. For swimmers age 6-10 this is a great jumping on point to competitive swim team. The AG1 group meets three (3) times each week. The team application is available on the MOR website at www.marlinsofraleigh.com. Competitive racing techniques are taught using age-appropriate methods and in a group setting.

Draft Rankings for 2013 summer season
Hi folks,
The Leagues and Scheduling Committee met earlier this month (rather than wait until spring) to discuss the results from the 2012 season, and draft a ranking schema for next year. Meeting in September offers us a number of advantages, chief among them fresher memories, more review time, and the opportunity to disseminate them to the rest of TSA for discussion at the October meeting. Please follow this link to the rankings document, print a copy to bring with you, take some time to review it prior to the October meeting, and come prepared with any questions you may have. Again, these are draft rankings; as the largest of the committees in TSA, we have representation from across the spectrum of team sizes/locations/divisions, but we certainly welcome your comments.
See you in October!

Youth Water Polo in Cary: TSA Coaches please pass along
For a third summer in a row, Triangle Aquatic Center & Triangle Water Polo Club will co-sponsor a summer youth team. The team will compete in an informal, 4-team league. The other teams include Hertitage subdivision, Sanford Squids, and the Raleigh Seahawks. The season will begin after the TSA swim season ends (late July) and will run through late August (approximately 5 weeks). You do not need to come to all practices or games to participate. This is informal and meant to be fun.
Age: 11 to 17 (Girls and Boys)
Pre-requisites: Participants should be able to swim 50 continuous yards freestyle and should feel comfortable treading water
Q: I have never played water polo before, would it be ok to play? A: Yes, we will help you learn the game.
If you wish to start a team at your subdivision (Heritage did this last year), we have the balls, caps, and coaches. Goals can be easily built for $150. Heritage did this last year. For more information, please email: robstuff@yahoo.com
Practice: Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 at TAC. Practice begin July 18.
Games: Saturdays (mornings or early afternoons). Game days: July 28 and Aug 4, 11, 18 & 25.
Not all games will be held at TAC. We will post game schedule later
Cost: $5 per practice and $5 per game. Pay at the front desk when you enter the pool facility.
Pre-requisites: Participants should be able to swim 50 continuous yards freestyle and should feel comfortable treading water
FAQs:
Q: Why play water polo? It is a fun, team sport and a great way to maintain aquatic shape during a slow time in the swim season.
Q: I can’t make all the practices or games, can I still play? A: Yes, this is an informal team and league.
Q: I have never played water polo before, would it be ok to play? A: Yes, we will help you learn the game.
Q: Is there a crash course in water polo I can take before joining to the team? A: Yes, we are running a 2 hour water polo clinic at TAC on Sat 7/14 from 1:00 to 3:00. We will cover basic strategies and skills. The cost is $10.
Q: Do girls play water polo? A: Water Polo is one of the fastest growing NCAA scholarship sports for women. As a relatively new sport for women, it takes less experience to obtain a scholarship in this sport than others. A decent swimmer with some knowledge of the game and natural athletic talent could earn a full ride to college. Trivia: The US men’s and women’s teams won silver medals in the 2008 Olympics. Make sure to watch the Olympic water polo games on TV this summer!

Stroke and turn judge certification
StrokeAndTurn.com is available online now. TSA stroke and turn judges can become certified by completing the online course and test.
This course is offered completely online and may be taken at user’s convenience, including stopping at any point and resuming later, repeating sections, etc. Certification takes about two hours to complete, including post-training exam. Training and exam both use video clips extensively.
An exam grade of 80 percent or better is required to pass. The user must pay $12.95 fee to take course; each team can decide on its own whether to reimburse judges who use this. Please be sure to select the TSA and your club in the profile section under League/Team Affiliation.
The course is based on USA Swimming rules, so there are only a few minor differences from TSA:
• Covers Individual Medley, which TSA doesn’t use
• Some sections about officials refer to the Head Judge and Meet Referee, posts which don’t exist separately in TSA (the two TSA Reps, acting jointly, are the only officials in charge of Stroke & Turn Judges at a TSA meet)
Note that this is an alternative option for certification and is not required! TSA will still offer traditional (free) S&T clinics which will be announced soon. Also, S&T Judge certifications from USA Swimming, NCAA, NCHSAA or YMCA are still accepted by TSA; send name, team, certification body, certification number and certification expiration date to strokeandturn.tsanc.org@gmail.com.

A Special Offer to Tarheel Swimming Association Teams:
As a long-time member of Prestonwood CC, I’ve seen first-hand how ‘challenging’ swim meets can be for both coaches and parents during the hot summer months when those late afternoon thunderstorms occur. I’d like to offer some help. My company “Online Sports Comm” provides an easy-to-use “mass-alert” service that allows coaches and team administrators the ability to send an instant, simultaneous email and sms text message to all meet participants and family members -- directly from the meet site. The service is flexible enough to be used ‘team-wide’ as well as within specific age-brackets.
There is nothing to learn, and best of all – team administrators don’t have to collect and enter any information themselves – as families can enroll directly from your team’s website. You can learn more about our service at:
Please use the ‘More Information” form on the website and we’ll contact you about special TSA pricing.

Coaches Needed for the New Preston Village Team
We are a subdivision off Davis Drive adjacent to Prestonwood. We have a great facility and are starting up a fun summer team this year. We are in need of a Coach & Assistant Coach to run morning & late afternoon practices as well as several exhibition meets. We need people with at least 1 year experience coaching and that work well with children & adults. We already have 70+ swimmers interested...many with previous team experience. Please contact Dee-Dee Cale at ddcale@nc.rr.com with your resume for consideration.

Fund Raising Opportunity!!
My wife and I are the new owners of the Smoothie King at Pleasant Valley. We would like to offer to deliver Smoothies to your meets as a fund-raising opportunity. We normally sell our 20 oz size for $4.49 but can sell them to you for $3.49 allowing you to keep $1.00 for every Smoothie you sell. (Of course, you could sell your smoothies for whatever price you feel is appropriate) I would highly suggest our two most popular Smoothies, Angel Food (Strawberry, Banana and Protein) and Caribbean Way (Papaya, Bananas, Strawberries and protein).
Please let us know if you are interested and we can get the process started.
Thanks for your time!
